Resurrection, works, faith
Resurrection of the body; Judgment based on works; what about faith?
At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies,
and shall give account for their own works.
And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting,
and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.
When speaking with even small groups on the Resurrection, almost always someone will ask if only the good will rise from the dead. This answer is quite clear in the Gospel of St. John 5:28-29 “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.”
Some people follow a “faith, not works” sound-bite. This is a distortion of what St. Paul writes and would be much better said “saved by faith, not works of the Old Testament”. St Paul is referring to Works of the Old Testament dealing with Temple Worship and financial support. Some people performed these works and neglected support of their parents, for example. Jesus explains that we will be judged by our works as relayed in Matthew 25:31-46.
What about faith? Holding (living) the Catholic Faith in an authentic way will lead us to works of charity — corporal and spiritual — and by those we will be judged.....
