Correction from yesterday, and 2 Sam 22:1 - 23:7 God, my rock
2 Sam 21:1-14 REVISED / CORRECTED FROM YESTERDAY
The NAB titles this section “Gibeonite Vengeance”, while the RSV titles it “David Avenges the Gibeonites”. Both of these neglect that the LORD had told David that there is blood guilt on the house of Saul due to his disobedience of God in killing Gibeonites. David consults the Gibeonites and they demand the death of seven sons of the house of Saul. Effectively, God had warned Saul that his line of succession would end — and this is how it ends. At the same time, David is forced to play a part.
I have been using the Revised Standard Version translation, RSV. Many Catholics use the New American Bible, NAB. Two interesting differences in these translations of the Bible....
1) The RSV says that the sons of Saul were “hanged”. The NAB of 1970 says they were “dismembered”. The current version of the NAB, viewed on the USCCB website, says that they were “executed”. Of course, it could be that they were executed by hanging, and then dismembered....
2) Mephibosheth vs. Meribbaal? The RSV uses “Mephibosheth”. The NAB uses “Meribbaal”. Either way, in this section there are two men with the same name. First we have the son of Jonathan, grandson of Saul. The second mentioned is the son of Saul and Rizpah.
2 Sam 22:1 - 23:7 God, my rock
David wrote many poetic songs. Here is another one, and it refers several times to God being a rock. Look through the entire Old Testament and you will find that God is often compared to, or referred to, as rock. No human is called rock — in the Old Testament. When Jesus tells Simon that he is now Peter — that is, Rock. Jesus is telling us that Peter is now God-like!
