2 Kings 18 “a bird in its cage”, says Sennacherib of Assyria
There being no more kings in Israel, our reading is much more simple! 2 Kings 18 starts with the fall of Samaria because the Assyrians next threaten Jerusalem and the land of Judah — just 17 miles further south. The Assyrian army conquers all of Israel, parts of Egypt, and a few cities in Judah. The commander mocks the “power” of Egypt as he threatens Hezekiah thus warning Hezekiah not to rely on Egypt for help. He even speaks to the people of Judah in their own tongue, trying to weaken their resolve. Drama, drama, drama! What will happen? What would you do if you were Hezekiah?
A historical note worth repeating: Sennacherib of Assyria kept written records of these battles, and boasts that Hezekiah was “made prisoner in Jerusalem like a bird in its cage”. Will it be “bye, bye birdie”? Tune in tomorrow.... (or read ahead?)
