I confess to Almighty God — that I don’t know what to do with my hands during this prayer!
Yesterday I gave you food for thinking about the words “through my fault....” — but I forgot to mention what to do with our hands!
During the penitential act, the priest and all the faithful have the same posture and gestures. That is, we stand with our hands folded.
The instructions for the mass state:
“And, striking their breast, they say: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;”
The instruction does not say “striking their breast three times”. If we were meant to, it would say so. So, the proper thing is to strike our breast once. That is to say, making a fist with the right hand, strike your breast and hold it there while reciting these words.
What about the left hand? I hold mine flat against my abdomen.
